Firestone Tires is a well-known brand that has a rich heritage in American tire manufacturing. Originally started in 1900 in Akron, Ohio, it was a direct competitor with Goodyear and two other well-known tire manufacturers in that city. For over seven decades, Firestone was known as one of the two largest tire companies in the United States. The company’s collaboration with Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company helped cement Firestone’s place in history. By the late 1970s, the company was facing more difficult times, and was bought out by Bridgestone, a Japanese tire manufacturer. More recently, Firestone’s North American operations have been based in Nashville, Tennessee. However, Akron is still an important place for the company as it is now the site of a $100 million technical center. Other major factories are located in Wilson, NC and Kings Mountain, NC, as well as Joliette, Quebec. Firestone Tires has long had a history with the racing industry, having supplied tires to the Indianapolis 500 as early as 1911 and supporting Formula One and Formula 5000 racing for years. Today, Firestone is the only supplier of tires for the entire IndyCar series. Firestone Tires produces a wide range of solutions at numerous price points for cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, race cars and more. Its top selections include its Firehawk, Champion and Destination tires. The brand remains committed to smart environmental programs and sustainability and has made it a goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2050.
